key system
Encomienda system
Encomienda system was a system of colonization used by the empire of Spain. It was a legal system by which the Spanish crown attempted to define the status of the Indian population in its American colonies. The Spanish crown granted natives for whom they were to take responsibility. When the Spanish conquered the natives in Mexico, and the other colonies, the natives had to work for the Spanish colonists. The colonists made the natives to work for them to get labor, gold or other products. In return, the Spanish had to protect the natives from the warring tribes and taught them Spanish language and Catholic faith. Many natives were forced to work hard. If the natives resisted, they were punished.
